Located a few kilometers from the center of Civitavecchia, the spa is located on a hill from which you can enjoy a splendid view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here you can admire the remains of an imperial-age structure, built between 123 and 136 AD. by Emperor Trajan, founder of the city. The spa was equipped with all the comforts and services typical of a Roman wellness center: hot and cold water tubs, massage rooms, changing rooms, bedrooms, gym, library and even a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna della Rocca. The spa was famous for the beneficial properties of its sulphurous waters, which flowed from a spring near a small lake called Aquae Tauri.

Santa Severa is a hamlet of Santa Marinella, an enchanting seaside resort in Lazio, about 50 km north of Rome. Santa Severa owes its name to a young Christian martyr who was martyred here in 298 AD. together with her brothers.

🏰 The castle:
The hamlet is famous for its medieval castle, which stands on the promontory where the ancient Etruscan city of Pyrgi, the main port of Caere (today's Cerveteri), once stood. Pyrgi was an important commercial and religious port, frequented by the Etruscans, Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians. Here you can admire the remains of two sacred areas dedicated to the goddess Uni (assimilated to the Phoenician Astarte) and the goddess Leucothea (goddess of dawn and life). Among the most precious finds there are three gold plates with inscriptions in Phoenician and Etruscan languages, which testify to the contacts between the two civilisations. In Roman times, Pyrgi became a fortified colony and then a summer residence of wealthy families. In the Middle Ages, a village developed on the ruins of the Roman city flanked by an 11th century castle, which was donated by a Norman knight to the Abbey of Farfa.

The castle then passed into the hands of various noble families and finally to the Pio Istituto Santo Spirito. Today the castle is an archaeological and cultural site, managed by the regional company LAZIOcrea, which offers guided tours, events, exhibitions and a hostel to stay. The castle is made up of a fortress, a Saracen tower, an early Christian church, a museum and a botanical garden.
